I agree that there are a lot of people who are overly concerned with word count, but there are legitimate reasons to keep it in mind as well. If itâ€™s not something important to you and your writing, you can ignore it. Trust me -- you will get brownie points for addressing these points later in your essay. So make sure you know the content and collect your notes -- do whatever you need to prepare. At the end of your paragraph, relate back to the question (don't forget your key-words) and make a judgment about this individual point in reference to your thesis. So go back to your screen, accept that the first draft is going to be DARN AWFUL, and challenge yourself to write that first sentence -- then another -- and another. Publishers like certain genres to be within certain word counts, so any author who hopes to be published has to create their works within these counts. What am I supposed to do if I write 1000 words, but it doesnâ€™t make the number of pages I want? I donâ€™t think I should have to write more words just because mine happen to be shorter than my classmates. We both wrote the same number of words, his are just longer so it takes up more pages. Finish by making a decision, tell the reader what the answer is. Start with something other than the cliche 'to conclude' or â€˜ultimately.â€™ Teachers are tired of hearing those words, and often, they can be left out. Go with â€˜ultimatelyâ€™ however if you feel like your conclusion is incomplete without this transitional phrase. The tendency toward perfectionism is the enemy of all progress. The biggest mistake I ever made was repeatedly re-reading everything I wrote, going back to edit, realizing I hated my writing, and then getting in the way of any progress I was making. I wrote an essay of 1550 words and it was barely 4.5 pages . This is a great guide, but people should be aware that these are just estimates. For example, I am currently writing a paper and have 5,000 words, but only 17 pages . Things like paragraph size and headers need to be taken into account as well. I need to find a wide font so I donâ€™t have to write as many words to fill up the pages on my assignment. If you can send me in the direction of the best wide font to do this, that would be great. Depending on the genre of book you are writing, word count can be critical in whether or not your writing can actually be published.

I canâ€™t say that any one of these factors stands out as a single attraction of St. Johnâ€™s. Almost every morning I visited the campus bookstore. I bought a copy of James Joyceâ€™s Dubliners, which I managed to snag some downtime to read. I took far too many photographs of the displays in the New Mexico History Museum, and I brought home a beautiful little red rock from the hike we took nearby. Therefore, the â€œAh-haâ€ moment that gets me excited cannot be overridden by artificial number in my report which my school thinks is so important. When a student in a sophomore music theory class wanted to ask a classmate a question about the rhythm of a jazz solo, she did, without fear that asking the question would make her seem unintelligent. Everyone in the classes spoke, not to the professor for the sake of a grade, but to each other for the sake of the exercise. Rather, itâ€™s the combination of them all that makes St. Johnâ€™s such a uniquely appealing college. Trying to single out any one appealing aspect of St. Johnâ€™s is, for me, like trying to pick a favorite piece in a jigsaw puzzle. As I go with the flow of thinking, I often find myself at far-off place from where I originally started. Sometimes pieces of thought which seem to be completely irrelevant to one another, before I know become connected and make one amazing, completed puzzle of my own making. These unexpected enlightenments, which I call my â€œAh-haâ€ moments, give me butterflies and make my heart flutter. These moments mean so much more to me than memorizing other peopleâ€™s ideas for exam results. Whenever I encounter something new, as my math teacher said, I have a habit of viewing it with the suspicious eyes. Then, why this way is or isnâ€™t working or linked causes me to ponder continuously. For me, the process of learning is full of wonderful and surprising events. When a book is read, a bond forms between author and reader. The author speaks, and the reader listens as they weave together the holes the author leaves them to fill. While the authorâ€™s words may be constant, the reader is the true variable. Some pieces might be more aesthetically pleasing than others, but none of them can compare to the whole picture. However, the classes were the part of the Summer Academy that stuck with me the most. Alfred Prufrockâ€ and learned ancient history from the ancients themselves, we pursued an underlying philosophical thread, examining our readings through the lens of courage. I still have the battered schedule, which I kept in my pocket. Although there are no majors or concentrations in St. Johnâ€™s, I feel that the Great Books curriculum was created to perfectly suit my interestsâ€"approaching the social sciences with a philosophical lens. Not more than two years later my literature teacher gave me as an extra reading the book Sophieâ€™s World by Jostein Gaarder. The book accomplished its objective and, with ease and short chapters of many philosophers, introduced me to the world of the big questions and the pursuit of truth. At some point, after reading it, I felt like Sophie as I wondered about my beliefs and values and about the world. On a Saturday halfway into my first semester at Smith, my friend and I went in search of a study room. We visited three academic buildings that afternoon. Almost without exception, every room we peeked into was packed with those little chairs that Will Ferrell squeezes himself into in Elf, the ones with the little writing shelf attached. On a philosophical basis, I chafe against the competitive, individualistic approach to learning that these desks represent. On a physical basis, at six-foot-two, I can barely fit behind them. St. Johnâ€™s college not only interests me, but draws me in very strongly because it combines in the most natural way, the study of politics and philosophy.
